The organism responsible for Pneumocystis infection—now a major cause of death in HIV patients—has been thought to be a protozoan for a long time. Recently, DNA analysis and molecular taxonomy using sequences of the small subunit of ribosomal RNA indicate that Pneumocystis species are fungi and probably members of the Archiascomycetes.
