Also known as: DVT.
A condition in which a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually in the legs. DVT can cause leg pain, but often occurs without any symptoms. DVT can develop while sitting still for a long time, or due to medical conditions that affect how the blood clots. A blood clot that has formed in the vein can break loose, travel through the bloodstream and lodge in the lungs, blocking blood flow (pulmonary embolism).
